It dawned one me like thunder this morning as I began preparing Thanksgiving dinner. For 52 years I've been doing the same thing on the same day. Dressing...too much sage? Not enough? Overdone ham..always. Thank God Sara Lee came in to help me with the pies...I don't do piecrusts. I recall other Thanksgiving blunders, one in particular. "I'll just have a bit of sherry while I'm cooking," I said. Taking the turkey out of the oven, it looked rather weird. As I placed it on the platter, I found out why...I had baked the dead thing on its breast. It was the sherry's fault.
Sure..I'm thankful...for many things. Four adult children; three second-chance grandchildren, and a husband, who, unfortunately, is bedridden with Parkinson's. I am struggling with my new title..."caregiver." It's a comedy of errors, one which was hilarious to me. After cleaning his dentures, I helped him put them back in his mouth. He looked as weird as the brown-titted turkey...they were in his mouth upside down - top on bottom; bottom on top. We both had a good laugh.
So...this Thanksgiving will be special. We are all together, a family who fusses and fights and makes up and loves each other dearly. And he is still with me.....
